View from behind a biker towing a whimsical train of little spirit characters in barrel cars through a small-town intersection.

Apparently, I Travel With an Entourage

We were out riding when I overshot a turn.

Nothing dramatic. I realized it, corrected, and swung around a little wider than I normally would.

Scott was behind me.

And apparently, from his perspective, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for my wide turn.  He saw in his mind’s eye:

I was towing a train.

Not just any train, either. It looked like one of those little trains we rode in as kids at petting zoos. The cars were made from 55-gallon drums, cut so a child could climb inside, with each little car trailing behind the one in front of it.

Except this train was filled with a whole collection of my little spirit guys, happily riding along behind me as though this were a completely normal mode of transportation.

When I had stopped at the stop sign, one of the little guys had jumped out to look at something along the side of the road. As I took off again, Scott watched him running after the train, trying not to be left behind.

Honestly, how could you not love these guys?

And maybe that’s what I’ve been noticing lately.

Spirit doesn’t always show up during a reading or meditation. It doesn’t always arrive carrying some profound message that needs to be deciphered and contemplated.

Sometimes I’m just riding my motorcycle and miss my turn.

And Scott sees something that makes us both laugh.

Sometimes Spirit seems to say, Here. Life is heavy enough. Have this.

A little levity.
A little love.
A reminder that there can be wonder tucked into completely ordinary moments, if we’re open enough to notice it.

I also love that the train was something familiar from childhood. Spirit so often seems to use the things we already know, pulling an ordinary image from somewhere in our memories and turning it into something unexpected.

Apparently, for us that day, it was a petting-zoo train full of little spirit guys being towed behind my motorcycle.

I don’t know that they had any great wisdom to impart that day.

Although apparently they do require a fairly wide turning radius.

And somehow, that was enough.
