Sidecars, School Buses and Secret Compassion

Tiny sidecars, big lessons in compassion.

The day started like any other ride. Just me, the open road, and the hum of the bike under my boots. But this time, I wasn’t alone—my “little guys” had hitched rides in sidecars, one on each side. Don’t ask me how they managed seatbelts; they were too busy bouncing, laughing, and throwing their arms in the air like they were on the world’s tiniest roller coaster. My guides trailed along too, steady and watchful, probably shaking their heads but smiling just the same.

We were sailing along until the road pulled us to a stop behind a school bus. The door folded open, and a child rolled down in a chair, tenderly helped by the driver. The world went still. And before I could so much as take a breath, my little guys shot out of their sidecars like confetti cannons of love—hugging, kissing, giggling, pouring joy over that child as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Nobody saw it but me. There was no slow-motion applause, no angel choir cueing up. Just a quiet roadside moment where unseen compassion flowed, real as rain.

That’s the thing about love—it doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it’s loud belly-laughs in the wind. Sometimes it’s a kiss on the cheek no one else notices. Either way, it transforms.

I rode away reminded that the world is filled with these invisible exchanges, small kindnesses we don’t always get to see but can still feel. Like sidecars full of joy that decide, at just the right time, to go racing toward someone who needs a hug.

So if you ever find yourself stopped behind a school bus—or anywhere that patience meets pause—take a breath. Maybe, just maybe, there’s an invisible act of love unfolding right in front of you. And if you listen close enough, you might even hear the giggle of a sidecar full of joy.
